There is a Sutra in Chanakya Neeti:
सर्वेषु गात्रेषु शिर: प्रधानम् ।
– चाणक्य नीति
In other words, among all the body organs, the head is the most important. That’s why today we will discuss where your head should be while sleeping.
Vishwakarma Prakash, the most authentic book on Vastu Shastra wrote:
दक्षिणे शयनम् ।
– विश्वकर्मा प्रकाश
This means that while sleeping, it is most beneficial for your head to be facing south. If that is not possible, then it is advisable for your head to be towards the east. According to further research mentioned in the Ashtanga Hridaya, if you are married, active, wealth-generating, and seeking growth, it is recommended to position your head in the southern direction. If you are single, seeking knowledge, a spiritual seeker, or leading a celibate lifestyle, then it is advised to place your head towards the east. It is not advisable to place your head in the west or north directions.
It has also been said that placing the head in the west brings about sorrow and while diseases may be curable, the sense of sorrow lingers, leading to prolonged illness. It is advised never to place the head in the northern direction, as it is said to cause a decrease in lifespan. Placing the head in the north leads to a reduction in lifespan and may cause incurable diseases such as AIDS, Cancer, and others.
So, next time you go to sleep anywhere, make sure to check the direction and try to sleep with your head facing south or east.
